Starting a Jungle game

Choose a difficulty, side, and move order. Animals normally move one square orthogonally, and selecting one displays every legal destination.

You win by entering the opposing den, capturing all enemy animals, or leaving the opponent without a legal move.

  • Animals cannot enter their own den.
  • A third occurrence of the same position and side to move is a draw.
  • Red and Blue pieces use different outlines as well as color.

Rivers, leaps, and traps

Only Rats enter rivers, and a Rat cannot capture across a river bank. Lions and Tigers leap over a complete river unless any Rat occupies the path.

An enemy animal inside one of your traps temporarily has rank zero. Its normal rank returns as soon as it leaves.

Ranks and the Rat–Elephant exception

Higher-ranked animals normally capture equal or lower ranks. A Rat on land may capture an Elephant, while an Elephant cannot capture a normal Rat. The trap rule still lets an Elephant capture an enemy Rat trapped on its side.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the Rat the only animal that swims?

Yes. Every other animal must stay on land.

When is a Lion or Tiger leap blocked?

Any Rat in a river square on the leap path blocks it.

Can the Elephant capture the Rat?

Not normally. It can capture a Rat only after that enemy Rat has entered one of its side’s traps.
